I guess you'd say I came to guitarmaking as a searcher. I was searching for a certain sound and feel.
I also wanted to have a hand in creating the pulse of the guitar I was playing. At first I was going to build just for myself, but it was so much fun I decided to do it full time and build for others as well.
I have had a great time doing this and I hope to continue as long as I can. I figure I'll do it till I'm 80 or 85. I think that will be my prime, the time I will build my finest guitars- just before I retire. Then I'll just hang out and play a bit and relax with friends making music.
I have one goal as a luthier. It is to create simple, elegant, refined guitars that sing with clarity and authority.
It is my true wish that when someone picks up one of my guitars and plays it that they are swept away by the experience and that the time spent playing it will transport them beyond the everyday. That's not too much to ask is it?
It's really a great joy to watch a person light up as they play their new guitar for the first time. It's a lot of fun for me. Sometimes, if the guitar is shipped I miss out on the moment, but I always hear about it from the owner.
I like it best when the owner comes to my shop to pick it up. That way we can talk about the guitar and I can set it up as we fine tune till it's just the way they like it.
I hope this gives you some insight as to who I am and what I love about guitarmaking.
